Why you NEED to budget for maternity pictures! Featuring Malka Ahmed

Maternity Photoshoots... Here's why you will want one!

[This is also an episode of Friday Free Talk on The Tranquility Tribe Podcast on iTunes. Listen here.]

Hey Tranquility Tribe! In this episode, Hehe got the chance to speak to Malka, a photographer who specializes in newborn and maternity photography, about a wonderful way to create lasting memories of pregnancy and infancy through photographs. Malka is a pure goddess behind the camera and her final prints are breathtaking.

Malka the Photography Goddess.

After studying literature and creative writing in college, Malka became more and more involved with photography through the combination of her passion for and knowledge about the art and her desire to capture meaningful family moments.  When her daughter was born, Malka’s interest in photography was intensified by the constant presence of an adorable little subject.  She described it as "magical." Inspired by motherhood, Malka decided to pursue a career in professional photography in order to help other new and expecting parents capture their special moments as well.

And this is where you come in!  You may be wondering why you might want professional pictures taken of yourself while pregnant.  Or maybe you’re feeling apprehensive about trusting your new little one with somebody that you don’t know.  Those thoughts are completely valid!  But as Malka explains during her conversation with Hehe, both maternity and newborn photos are an incredible and unique way to remember and share the incomparable experience of bringing a tiny human into the world.

Documenting your changing body can be hard.

Let’s face it – pregnancy is HARD.  Your body is changing, making you feel tired, uncomfortable, and maybe even less confident than normal.  And you feel this way for a reason; growing a tiny human is an incredible task.  Through all the difficulties of pregnancy, it is important to remember that you are working hard and deserve to pamper yourself.  As Hehe points out, maternity photography is a great way to empower expectant parents to realize how amazing their bodies truly are.  And taking pictures of yourself while pregnant can be very meaningful for your new baby as well; as they grow up, they will treasure the beautiful display of love that you felt for them even before they were born.

It’s pretty easy to understand why newborn photography is so popular.  After all, who wouldn’t want to take photos of those adorable little cheeks??  Taking professional pictures of your newborn is a very special way to commemorate this milestone in your life.  But of course, safety comes first!

Throughout the podcast, Malka emphasizes some important qualities to keep in mind when searching for a photographer:
  • Newborn safety and posing certification – your photographer should be trained on how to work with newborns so that they are safe and comfortable the whole time
  • Sick policy – to keep your tiny human healthy, your photographer should make sure that everyone in the studio is healthy as well
  • Awareness when working with different ages – toddlers and infants should be photographed separately so that all children are safe!

Top-Notch Advice

Besides encouraging parents to document the priceless moments of parenthood, what’s Malka’s top piece of advice for expectant parents?  Keep your home noisy – your new baby will sleep more soundly (and maybe you’ll be able to get some rest, too)! We love this advice. Put some white noise by your baby and go about your day!

8 Questions to Ask During a Doula Interview

8 Questions to Ask During a Doula Interview  Ever see something on the internet that makes you cringe... Do you ever see anything on the internet that makes you cringe so hard that you want to scream? I can name a couple: the incessant bickering on FB, the mom's groups that everyone thinks they are a medical doctor or a licensed psychologist, and don't forget about the person who post what they are doing when they are doing it every single day (I also worry about their safety!). Whew, it's exhausting.  Over my time as a doula, there is one thing that still makes me cringe just as hard now as it did the very first time I experienced it. There is nothing worse than an expectant parent who shows up to an interview with printed questions from the internet. The worst questions are the ones that highlight the fact that this person truly has no idea what a doula can truly do to transform their birth experience. The questions of "How long have you been a doula?&quo
